Altigraphs

This page explains what personal data Altigraphs collects, why, and how it's used. This is a small, community-run project, and this policy describes our practices in plain language.

01

What we collect

When you create an account: your username, email address, and password, stored as a secure hash, never in plain text. Optionally: a display name, home region and its coordinates (used only for future "climbs near you" features — coordinates are never shown to anyone, including other users), unit preference, notification preferences, and a profile photo. When you contribute, we store the climbs, photos, and notes you add, all credited to your username.

02

How we use it

To run your account and keep it secure, to send the verification and notification emails you opt into, to credit your contributions publicly under your username, and to review reports made about content or accounts.

03

What's public

Your username, display name, avatar, and contributions — climbs, photos, notes — are visible to anyone. Your email address, password, and home coordinates are never shown to other users or made public.

04

Third parties

Searching for a location — your home region, or a climb's region — sends that search text directly from your browser to MapTiler. Drawing a climb route may send coordinates to Mapbox for road-snapping. Viewing a climb's live weather sends only that climb's coordinates, not yours, to Open-Meteo. Account emails are sent through our mail server. We don't use analytics or advertising trackers.

05

Cookies

We set a session cookie to keep you signed in, and a one-year preferred-language cookie only if you use the language switcher. Neither is used for advertising or tracking across other sites.

06

Data retention

We keep your account data while it's active. Deactivating an account, available on request, disables sign-in but, like a wiki, doesn't remove contributions already published under CC BY-SA 4.0 and credited to your username — those remain part of the open climb encyclopedia.

07

Your choices

You can update your profile details, notification preferences, and home region at any time from your account settings. For anything else — including questions about your data or requesting account deactivation — contact us below.

08

Children's privacy

Altigraphs isn't directed at children, and accounts require you to be at least 16 years old.

09

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the site evolves. The date at the top reflects the last change.
